According to the 1860 census John C. Smith was 41 years of age. So, he was born about 1819 in Germany. His profession is listed as Shoemaker.

"By a letter received in town a few days ago, we learn that John A. Templeton, Co. K 105th Regt. P.V. and Prof. Smith, a musician of the same regiment, both from this place, were taken prisoners during the six days fight before Richmond. They were in the hospital, and were unable to make their escape. We trust they may soon recover from their sickness and get back once more among their friends"
